Identity is the Curaçao flag painted on canvas; deep blue, yellow stripe, white stars with calabash pieces mounted across the surface, arranged to form the letters CW. Curaçao, Willemstad aka Home.
Calabash is the material that has been on this island longer than any flag, any name, any border. The natives carried water in it. Enslaved Africans made music from it when music was forbidden. It grew in the gardens of grandmothers across this island for generations. And here it spells out who we are. This is what identity looks like when it is made from the inside. Carved from the island’s own fruit and mounted on the island’s own colors.
For the Curaçaoan who wants their walls to know where they come from. For the one who left and carries the island anyway. For the visitor who felt something here they did not expect to feel.
